AutoSock Standard X20 Winter Traction Aid, For Passenger Tires

AutoSock Standard X20 Winter Traction Aid, For Passenger Tires Review

Autosocks is the best thing that has happened to me this winter. We have a steep (30-50% grade), quarter-mile long driveway with a couple of turns on the steep parts, fairly typical for rural WV. Up until this winter, we've never felt the need to have AWD on anything but the pickup, which I don't drive. On the rare occasions when I couldn't get the front-wheel-drive vehicle up the driveway -- when it's snow- or ice-covered -- my husband hooked it up to the tractor and towed the car up. This winter, though, the brakes gave out on the tractor, and we have had more than our usual amt of winter weather with none of the usual thawing afterwards. So we started looking for AWD vehicles when I came across an article in Consumer Reports about Autosocks. Intrigued, I visited Amazon to check for availability and cost. (Amazon didn't have my tire size in stock so I bought them from tirerack.com and ate the shipping cost.)

I first used the AutoSocks when I had to park in a snowy, slushy spot on a dirt and gravel drive at a friend's house -- and then couldn't back out. I slipped on the 'Socks and voila! my car was back on the road in minutes. Very impressive, especially since I had to back out of the spot.

When I reached home, I tried getting up the driveway sans 'Socks and slipped and slid back down. So I slipped on the 'Socks again and just like that, I zipped right up the driveway, no slipping or sliding, just as if there were no snow or ice on it.

Note: Do follow the manufacturer's instructions and remove the 'Socks when you reach clear pavement.

After several uses, the fabric does show some signs of wear but there are no holes and I see no reason why they won't see me thru this winter and several more.

AutoSocks is one of the best purchases I have ever made. They perform exactly as promised and have saved me the cost of snow tires and a new AWD vehicle. I highly recommend them.

AutoSock Standard X20 Winter Traction Aid, For Passenger Tires Specifications

Unexpected winter weather can create driving conditions demanding more traction than conventional tires -- or even snow treads -- can provide. But tire chains are bulky to store and can be difficult to put on in cold, snowy weather. Now there is an easy-to-use alternative to chains: Designed in Norway, AutoSock is a new and innovative lightweight fabric-based, temporary traction aid for cars and trucks that is easy to mount and gets a grip on slippery surfaces as snow and ice. AutoSock, a high-technology textile tire covering, utilizes specially patterned fibers that optimize grip on slick surfaces by managing the thin layer of water on top of ice and snow. Through its weaving pattern and thousands of small fibers AutoSock clings to snow and ice, increasing vehicle traction, improving safety and adding to driver confidence.

With AutoSock, you won’t experience the rattles and bumpy ride associated with tire chains, and it is approved for speeds up to 30 mph. AutoSock is easy to install following these simple steps: Stop the vehicle and apply the emergency brake, fit AutoSock to the drive wheels of the vehicle, starting at the top of the tire and working downwards. Then, stretch the elastic band over the top of the tire to the inside of the tire, tighten the crossing strap, and move the vehicle approximately 3 feet and pull the remainder of the AutoSock into position. AutoSock automatically self-centers when you begin driving. When you’ re back on snow-free roads, slip the AutoSock off and slip it back into the included storage bag.

After use, AutoSock should be put back in the storage bag until the destination is reached. Then they can be machine-washed and put back in the bag, ready to go for the next snow or ice storm. Note: AutoSock is not meant for severe snow conditions, and cannot be substituted for chains for travel through mountain passes. The standard AutoSock accommodates non-performance tire sizes (typically OEM sizes for economy passenger vehicles). For performance tires, try AutoSock High Performance.
